This article summarises the work I have been doing up to this point in my PhD project. It is rather gratifying to see it all together in one document!
In particular, we report new results clarifying the role of surface plasmon excitations in near-field heat transfer between two-dimensional metals. We explore the interplay of the surface plasmon effects with those of finite disorder in the form of short-range impurity scattering.
