Today, all over Switzerland kids were invited to visit the workplace of their parents or friends (www.nationalerzukunftstag.ch/). ETH Zurich opened its doors as well and kids had the chance to get tours or visit different departments and institutes. Two young boys took the opportunity to visit the nano physics group I, ESR 8 Rebekka, work with. Apart from discovering the joy and fascinating science of experiments with liquid nitrogen, they visited the labs and learned about the experiments which are performed at low temperatures. Together, we investigated a broken CD in an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM). Seeing the Pits and Lands encoded on the CD lead to a discussion of not only the working principle of an AFM, but also a CD player and computer.
